I know from experience that doing well in English Literature is not just about memorising notes or quotations. It is about understanding what a question is really asking, knowing how to build an argument, and being able to express your ideas clearly and confidently.
I completed my G.C.E. Advanced Levels with 3 A passes, an Island Rank of 4th and a District Rank of 2nd, and I have also completed my LLB with Second Class Honours (Upper Division). Alongside my own studies, I have been teaching students at both O/L and A/L level, and teaching has become something I genuinely enjoy.
My classes are very discussion-based and student-friendly. I like students to actually understand a poem, play or novel instead of simply memorising someone else’s interpretation. We look at why a writer has used a particular word, image or technique, how different ideas can be connected, and most importantly, how to turn all of that into a strong exam answer.
A big part of my classes is focused on essay writing and exam technique. I help students with structuring answers, developing arguments, selecting quotations, improving analysis and learning how to answer the exact question instead of writing everything they know about a text.
I also understand that every student struggles with something different. Some students understand the texts but cannot structure essays. Others have good ideas but struggle to express them. Some simply need someone to make Literature feel less confusing. So I try to adjust my teaching according to the individual student rather than teaching every student in exactly the same way.
My goal is for students to leave my classes feeling that Literature actually makes sense, and that when they see a question in the exam, they know where to start and what to do.
